A Song In The Night:
Christmas is a time of joy and cheer, and for many the thoughts of opening presents under the Christmas Tree with family and friends warm the their hearts and give reason for smiles and happiness. However have you ever considered what Christmas would be like without Christmas Songs?
In the last few years studies have shown that Music relieves stress, reduces pain and increases energy. No wonder the bible has so much to say about music.
But what I find interesting is the fact that the bible specifically talks about a song in the night!
"Ye shall have a song, as in the night....and gladness of heart . Isa 30:29. It is also a promise:
"Yet the Lord will command his loving kindness in the daytime, and in the night his song shall be with
me... Psa 42:8 " Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt compass me
about with songs of deliverance; Psa 32: It is also a command, something the Lord has asked us to do: "Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; Eph 5:19 "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and in hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord Col 3:16 God is the one who gives us this a song in the night: ...God my maker, who giveth songs in the night. Job 35:10
A few days ago a face book friend posted that she had woke up singing, it was a hymn and she spoke of the blessings that it had given her. I have had that experience on many occasions and it seems to be just a wonderful way to start your day! And what a peaceful feeling and a heavenly restful sleep to be singing praise to God in your spirit while your head lays on your pillow.
I love Christmas time but my favorite thing about Christmas is singing. I love to hear Carolers singing their happy songs, and every radio station, has the Christmas cheer that Christmas songs bring into our lives. I could not imagine what Christmas would be like without the songs we all love to hear this time of the year.
Singing and the value of singing is apparently not limited to us humans as the bible tells us that the Angels (called "Morning Stars" sang together) "When the morning star sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?" Job 38:7 Why were they singing? The text just before this in Job 38:5 puts it in context us "Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened ? Or who laid the corner stone there of? So here we have the Angels participating in celebrating the Creation of our world. We don't hear about angels singing too often but what a sound it must be to hear the angels singing Glory to God. The story is told in the bible how the angels came in the night and sang a song, but only a few humans were in tune with the heavenly music channel that night. Here is the story as Recorded in Luke 2
Luk 2:1 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.
Luk 2:2 (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)
Luk 2:3 And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.
Luk 2:4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)
Luk 2:5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.
Luk 2:6 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.
Luk 2:7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
Luk 2:8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
Luk 2:9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
Luk 2:10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
Luk 2:11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
Luk 2:12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
Luk 2:13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
Luk 2:14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
Luk 2:15 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.
Luk 2:16 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.
Luk 2:17 And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.
Luk 2:18 And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.
Wow what a night. Imagine the night sky lightening up from east to west as the heavenly beings sing their chorus of praise. But wait stop and think about this for a moment. The angels sang when God created us, now He comes to be one of us, to die, yet they are singing praise and celebrating in joy! What is it to these angels that they should sing such a song? Why should they care? Just who are we that the heavenly host would leave the beauty of heaven for a doomed world to share the great news that God of the universe is come to be our brother, our savior, born to die for such as you and I? Could it be that Angels who have watched the foundations of our world being created, who watched our parent Adam and Eve plunge our world into death, could it be that they understand salvations story? Could it be that they understand the Great Love our God, our creator has for us? That He poured out the entire resources of heaven to save us! For God so loved the world, that He gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16
Because the "Son of God" came to us and became a baby to Mary by the Holy Spirit born in a stable, laid in a manger, lived our life, and died our death, we are going to have a new song to sing "And He hath put a new song in my heart, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and trust in the Lord Psa, 40:3 This new song will be a song that only the ransomed of the Lord shall be able to sing. "And the ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads; they shall obtain joy and gladness and sorrow and sighing shall flee away. Isa 35:10 My friend did you get that last part... "sorrow and sighing shall flee away" Sometimes it seems like this world is as if it was in the darkest part of the night, and sorrow and sighing are everywhere, the cries of sinners and saints alike burden with the cares of this world surround us on all sides, and yet its in the midst of our troubles, in the midst of our despair that He gives us a song in the night to cheer us, to encourage us to save us. Jesus is our song in the night, our redeemer our Peace our Morning Star and guiding light.
I don't doubt for one moment that when Christ comes to take us home, when He sounds that triumphant trumpet that there will be Angels singing and praising God. Many of these angels will have been our guardians, would have defended us from the evil that surrounds us in this world. They would have fought many a battle for us, and alongside with us as we struggled in the battle for peace and good will and wrestle with letting go and letting Christ take over. I know I cannot fathom the wonderful sound of a triumphant song, sang by angelic host as the battle for this world and for our souls comes to a close. I can hear the songs crescendo to a sound that shakes the earth. Then echoing back will be our song, a song that the angels, cannot sing. They cannot sing it because they have never experienced the joy of our Salvation! Then we will travel to our new home, were there is no night because the light that fills us, will be the light from the throne of God. We will no longer have a need for a song in the night for He will have given us a new song that we shall thrill to sing thru out eternity. And all this because He came as a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes announced by an angelic song in the night.
Until that day don't forget to ask God for your song in the night, (It's a promise) it will give you peace, happiness and joy, relieve your stress, heal your sickness, sooth the soul, and give you energy for the day. And don't' stop singing those Christmas Songs, how fitting that they come in the winter months, as it is the night of the year, but we don't have to stop at Christmas we can sing all year long.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New year!
May God bless you and give you songs in the night with peace and good will.
